When I hiked Amicalola Falls today, I averaged a 40 minute mile, so I did some math. To do the 82 miles of the AT over Thanksgiving, I’d probably have to do some night hiking. To avoid that, my wife is up letting me hike the south part of the Georgia AT over Labor Day weekend. Thanksgiving will be for the North GA section at a less-rushed pace. I’ll take my son up the approach trail and drop him with my wife at the first forest service road. With Summer daylight hours, I hope I could make it to Neel’s Gap Labor Day evening.
By my calculation, I burned some ~2600 calories today, but I’ve only got ~2000 packed for each day on the trail. I’ve started working on a Summer pack. I adjusted this diary for new travel dates and I’ll make a new one later with a different gear list for North Georgia and Winter.
Just this week I ordered some fancy zpacks dry bags for my sleeping bag and sleeping clothes for the Thanksgiving schedule. The website noted a 5 week lead time for shipping, so I’ll have to watch the weather and maybe do garbage bags for Labor Day.
