Ask the Advogatos: Why do free software projects fail?

I thought this article would have something to do with systems investigation and analysis. It is a post and discussion on the internet from some popular open source program developers that discuss why some projects fail. In this case, it seems that each person has their own opinion. In some cases, people have thought that projects fail because they don't plan properly what they are actually going to do before they actually start typing out code. One person says this is one reason projects soon become impossible to maintain. In many cases, even for myself, open source projects are started in an effort for the hacker to learn something. Perhaps once they've learned everything they have wanted from a particular project, they move on to something bigger instead of maintaining what they have. That would definitely show why there is little documentation in most open source projects. What seems to be left out is a point that open sourced software is generally developed for free, by people in their spare time essentially as a hobby. When real life kicks in for those people and priorities change, things they do in their free time probably get modified.
